Air Hockey Table Rules

Defined by the USAA, there are several basic rules to observe when playing air hockey. The game is a two person sport that involves an Air Hockey Table, two paddles, and a puck.

The player who wins the coin toss at the start of the game is the one who initiates the game with the first puck. When the puck goes past the horizontal plane within the goal area, a point is counted through an electronic scoring device. The first player to score seven points by shooting the puck inside the opponent’s goal is the winner. A foul is committed when a player takes longer than seven seconds to return the pick to the opposite side. Sometimes, this can result in the puck being handed over to the opponent. A foul and possession swap also occurs if a player touches the puck with anything other than the mallet itself. The opponent receives a free shot when the puck happens to cross the center line, aiming at the goal but is stopped by the player using any object other than the paddle. This is called goaltending. The opposite player receives possession of the puck when their opponent crosses the center line completely with their mallet. The opposing player gets the puck when a player causes the puck to leave the table through an offensive hit. A defensive hit known as “charging” is often fouled when the ball leaves the table as well.

The origins of Air Hockey are uncertain but it is believed to have been created in the late 1960’s where it became an immediate success in the USA.  By 1975, the “United States Air-Table Hockey Association” (USAA) was formed and presently remains the only recognized worldwide player organization for Air Hockey.  “World Championships” have taken place since 1978 although the winners have been overwhelmingly of American nationality.  The excitement of the game is gradually winning over European citizens and it is becoming increasingly popular as both a pub game and home game, across Europe.

Air Hockey can be played at home using small, table-top games or real aficionados’ and pubs or clubs, can purchase a full size, 8 foot long Air Hockey Table as required for tournament play or, smaller versions starting from 4 foot in length.  Real Air Hockey Tables will utilise some sort of mechanism to produce a cushion of air on the table top surface, which has the effect of increasing the puck speed.  Cheaper Air Hockey Tables may be made using a super slick plastic surface to increase the speed, although it technically is not then, an Air Hockey table!

Other than the table, the only other equipment required to play the game are pucks and mallets. Air Hockey “Pucks” are just slim plastic discs, usually made from polycarbonate.  The mallet, also called a paddle, is a small plastic handle attached to a flat surface that should lie flush to the table surface.  The most common mallets you see played with look like small plastic hats or little sombreros.

Indeed, the $15 challenge is tough, especially if you want to buy that $18 bottle of Baladin's Wayan, or do the continental comparison.

I have to say that 60 Minute was a great first choice. Caglione got that idea from watching a cooking show where the chef said the key to dish was slowly adding butter over the course of the dish instead of a big chunk all at once. He took the principle to his IPA brewing, rigged up an air hockey table to slowly vibrate the hops into the kettle, and an bold new way to enjoy the humulus lupulus was created, to the great hilarity of all who partake.

  3. There actually might be something to this. I've also stayed at Pro35's parents house and I recommend the basement couch in addition to the blueberry pancakes... still the best night's sleep I've ever had. And who can resist the Air Hockey table?
Is it listed on TripAdvisor yet? I should to leave a review. The rates are also quite competitive with other B&Bs in the Hudson Valley.

But no, it wasn't Erik Dekker. There was a little Danish fellow that was suppose to come visit but apparently the box he put his bike shoes in didn't clear airport security so I sent him back to Mexico.. or was it Italy.

So yes, we are starting a nice little anglophone cyclists enclave over here. We can even play Air Hockey and have blueberry pancakes, as long as by "Air Hockey" you mean pétanque and by "pancakes" you mean crepes.
